STEVE PALMER'S - RACING EDUCATION - ALL THIS WEEK IN YOUR RACING POST

TODAY STEVE PALMER  IS BACK DOWN TO EARTH, AFTER YESTERDAY'S TRIP TO PLUMPTON .

Read about Steve's adventure at Plumpton yesterday.... how did he get on?
Steve went off to the races thinking to himself "This racing game is easy - just back anything McCoy sits upon, but no, no, no it's  not quite so easy ... infact it can be quite confusing to start with ....

"I was looking for horses who resembled stags. Are trainers
allowed to enter actual stags?   No, no no ...

Take your Racing Post with you having looked through it before setting off and making any particular notes that you may need when you actually get to the track, once at the track buy a racecard. Don't throw the racecard away after, put it in your reference file for future reference ....

Tomorrow: Palmer samples the atmosphere in the bookies ....

Steve's  Plumpton adventure into horseracing goes like this ....

“CHRISTMAS is coming and the goose is getting plump. I expect the geese in Plumpton are particularly plump. But I’m not here to inspect the geese. “Racehorses are my animal of choice this week and I want to learn all about them.

“In my quest to get rich backing fast horseys - following in the footsteps of colleague David Ashforth and his annual Grab A Grand – I liaised with the man himself for some advice. Dave told me to approach jockeys and trainers for information on their runners. That only works, though, if you know who the jockey’s and trainers are. I asked a small chap if he had any good rides today and he looked back at me with disdain. Lesson one: not every small chap at a racetrack is a jockey.

“My second tactic was a safer bet - the official matchday programme (racecard) – but I found the verdicts on each horse terribly confusing. Maccabees in the opening contest, for example, was summed up as: “modest and quirky handicapper on the level, often pulls’. He’s the complete opposite of me at the discotheque then (rarely pulls).

“The race was for three- year- olds, which staggered me. It is amazing how quickly horses develop. There was a girl called Clare at my school who went through puberty at a ridiculously young age  - she was remarkably busty in her early teens – but she was a slow burner compared to those in the horsey community. Imagine if a set of three-year-old humans were charged with opening proceedings at Plumpton’s Christmas Raceday. It would be rubbish. Horses are jaw – droppingly fast learners ….

Get your own Racing Post today and for the rest of this week, you won't be dissapointed.

Tomorrow: the shake-up at Channel 4

Channel 4 will not be the same from New Years Day 2013, some of our friends will be missing. John McCririck (Punters Champion), John Francome (Equus Champion) Alastair Down (Out and About Champion), Mike Cattermole (Broadcasting Champion) and Derek Thompson (Equus Champion) will not be around, as the winds of change take over at Channel 4. A New Horseracing Team waiting in the wings will take over with Clare Balding (Equus Champion) at the helm.

Mac at Cheltenham last weekend, after a lifetimes service to horseracing, said that he felt like "a dead man walking".
