WHAT IS LASIX AND WHY IS ITS USE PROVING TO BE SO CONTROVERCIAL ?

Lee Mottershead  brings us news on LASIX
GOSDEN and O'BRIEN back 'brave move' to ban Lasix use next year."

"JOHN GOSDEN and Aidan O'Brien have given their backing to the Breeders Cup's plan to ban the use of Lasix at next year's meeting, with O'Brien describing the move - hotly contested by American trainers -as "the way forward."

"The two European training heavyweights expressed sympathy for the views of their  US counterparts, but offered full support for a policy that has the potential to cause a domestic revolt following this week's fixture, at which use of the anti-bleeding diuretic has been forbidden in the five juvenile races.

"Gosden, who began his training career at Santa Anita, said "Lasix becomes a dependency and there's no doubt it improves a horse's performance because it reduces bodyweight and pressure on the capillaries. As a drug, it does help horses run faster.

"Six of seven generations of American horses have raced on quite strong medications and that is an issue. It is a concern to a lot of us that the American thoroughbred is most definitely not the tough creature of old. There used to be much  tougher horses when there were no medications.

"The Breeders' Cup is trying to make a stand. They are doing it for the purity of the breed and I strongly see why it is being done. If you're having a so- called world championship you probably need to have it drug-free. I can see the logic in it, but I can also see why trainers here are saying. 'why ban Lasix when we've used it for years?'

"Legendry US trainer Bob Baffert this week described Lasix-injected four hours before a race in California -as "humane" while top Canadian trainer Mark Casse described the drug ban as "bad for the sport".

"However, O'Brien, a ten-time Breeders' Cup winner, said: "It has to be the way forward and there's no doubt it's the right thing to do, but it was a brave move by the Breeders' Cup.

"For the whole thoroughbred breed the less medication the better because that clears up the muddy picture about ability. Its a hard thing to change because its part of the culture here and a lot of horses do bleed when they are trained very hard but medication masks a lot of stuff."

"O' Brien also argued that neither the Breeders' Cup nor Ascot's Qipco British Champions Day should be moved in the calendar despite the two showpiece events this year falling only two weeks apart.

"He said: "I think Ascot is in a great position and so is the Breeders Cup, but you can't suit everybody all the time. In an ideal world you might prefer a three-week gap to two weeks, but everybody tries to do their best and I wouldn't want to change Ascot or the Breeders' Cup."

Breeders' Cup November 2nd and 3rd 2012

What exactly is Lasix?

Lasix is an anti-bleeding diuretic forbidden in the five juvenile races at this years
Breeders' Cup meeting.

Experimental research into improving medication and experimenting to finding new and better medication to prevent all sorts of suffering is going on all the time, so whatever is the point of preventing such medication being used if it can make all the difference to a racehorse who is suffering through breaking blood vessels.

Not so sure that John Gosden and Aidan O'Brien would be quite so bold in their opinions relating to pain and suffering if they were the ones left to carry and give birth to the babies.
