Internet hit as jockey's turn on Gangnam Style
Lee Mottershead brings us news
"RACING'S
search for a fresh young audience has on occasions taken the sport
in
unusual directions, but none as unusual, or downright bizarre, as the video
spoof that in the last week has turned five journeymen jump jockeys into internet sensations.
'Jockey Style' , a Racing For Change-led parody of the summer's South Korean music hit Gangnam Style, has been watched by more than 450,000 people on YouTube since going live seven days ago - in the process advertising on a global stage the dubious dancing talents of Charlie Huxley, Dave Crosse, Gerald Tumelty, Sam Jones and Colin Bolger. Reaction to the 97-second piece of art, for which US-based former rider Kevin Torbin has penned and sung the lyrics has been varied, with stunned viewers describing it as "cringe central" so bad its good" and "absolutely so freaking awesome". Among the more freaking awesome sections is the glorious crescendo moment in which the inspired phrase, "hey, sexy horsey". is followed by the word "yep" repeated ten times, while among the visual highlights is the sight of Crosse attempted to feed a hamburger to a cardboard cutout of Tony McCoy.
"The
response has been unbelievable ," says Luke Harvey, who directed and
edited Jockey
Style, "I thought it might be relatively popular but nowhere
near as big as it has become.
"I
had some vague idea what I wanted, but when we got the five jockeys together at
Brendan Powell's yard in Upper Lambourn,
Crosse was the only one who had actually seen Gangnam Style, so we went to the
Malt Shovel for its wi-fi, had a couple of pints each and filmed the shot of
Charlie reading the Racing Post.
"It
became quickly apparent that Charlie had to be the main man because the others
were so uncoordinated. As a group they where horrendous to direct. I don't have
much hair left to pull out, which is probably a good thing as they were an
absolute nightmare . I was screaming at them all the time but they were really
good sports and we got there in the end."
"Pleased
that they did is Racing For Change's Stephanie Jones. "I knew it had the
potential to be big. "she says .
"Ant
and Dec tweeted that they loved it the day it came out and since then it's gone
really wild. It's nice that we've got horseracing so much publicity at very
minimal financial cost."
