Jon Lees Cecil: why I owe FRANKEL so much

"Sir Henry Cecil and FRANKEL: an emotional farewell as the superstar
moves out of the trainer's yard yesterday"

"SIR HENRY CECIL yesterday thanked FRANKEL for giving him the strength to cope with his ill health as the world champion racehorse left his Newmarket yard to return to the stud where he was born and begin a new life as a stallion.

"In a heartfelt tribute, Cecil who is battling stomach cancer, said he owed so much to the horse who, after three brilliant unbeaten campaigns during which he won 14 races, is relocating from Warren Place to owner Khalid Abdullah's Banstead Manor Stud in nearby Cheveley.

"They were emotional moments for the trainer, his wife Jane and stable staff as they said farewell to the superstar colt whose performances led Cecil to hail him the best he has trained and possibly the greatest racehorse ever.

"Today is a sad day in some ways for us as he has given us so much pleasure over the last three years" Cecil said. "But I want to thank FRANKEL for so much, for being such a very special part of my training career. He has given me so much strength this season when I have had health problems. My feeling was that Ihad  to be there for him at home and on the racecourse, only missing the Sussex Stakes because of treatment.

" There is no doubt FRANKEL has been a brilliant racehorse. I am pretty certain there has never been a better or more talented thoroughbred. He had the speed to be a champion sprinter and then, once he grew up and settled, he got a distance with a turn of foot that makes champions. He continued to improve.

"There will be a big gap to fill without him at Warren Place and I will be very lucky to ever get another horse of that extraordinary quality and ability. Still, one has to look forward and I hope there are some stars of the future within the occupants of the yard."

"Cecil also acknowledged FRANKEL'S contribution to the sport as a whole, saying : "I feel that FRANKEL has done a great deal to gather interest in our sport. There are so many who have enjoyed his presence on the racecourse, people who never followed racing before he arrived on the scene."

"Cecil paid tribute to the work done behind the scenes at his yard, particularly that of FRANKEL'S gallops partner SHANE FETHERSTONHAUGH, as well as regular jockey TOM QUEALLY and, on a more personal note, his wife Jane.

"There are a lot of people in the yard who have played their part with FRANKEL and I really appreciate everyone's efforts," he said . "Thank you to all the staff, SHANE and TOM QUEALLY for helping me get this great horse to achieve what he has.

"I want to thank my wife for helping me through what I have to admit has been a difficult year in more ways than one. Without her by my side I am certain that I would not have been able to do it. Jane and I are very fortunate that Banstead Manor is only ten minutes away from us so we can continue our friendship with FRANKEL,"

"FRANKEL was welcomed back to Banstead Manor by a Juddmonte team  that included general manager  Philip Mitchell, who said: "in the foaling unit on February 11th, 2008, at 11.40pm little did we realise we were witnessing the birth of a phenomenal racehorse. The rest, as they say, is history and it is now extremely exciting that FRANKEL will be returning to the stallion unit at Banstead, some 500 yards from where he was born."
