STRONG HENNESSY FIELD EXPECTED AS 35 STAND THEIR GROUND

A strong field for the 56th running of the Hennessy Gold Cup at The Racecourse Newbury on Saturday 1 December is expected after 35 of the 52-strong entry stood their ground at today’s final forfeit stage. Follow the link at the bottom of this page for the full line up.

Among those expected to line up for the £150,000 showpiece are ante-post market leaders Bobs Worth and Badger Ales Chase winner The Package quoted at 4-1 and 7-1 respectively with Winter Festival sponsor, Sportingbet.

Joint top weights Burton Port and Tidal Bay remain on target with the latter also having the option of this weekend’s Betfair Chase at Haydock which would leave Harry The Viking, owned jointly by Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson as Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls’ sole representative.

Stephen Higgins joint Managing Director of The Racecourse Newbury said, “This year’s Hennessy is shaping up to be a cracking contest with no real surprises among today’s forfeits and we are looking forward to three very busy and action packed days next week.”

The Sportingbet Winter Festival gets underway on Thursday, 29 November with ticket prices from just £20.00.

TEAM KING

Alan King's wholehearted Hold on Julio booked a place in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury on 30th November, after a great comeback run to fill third place at Cheltenham on Saturday.

King said: "With Long Run reportedly heading for the Betfair Chase at Haydock instead, our fellow will hopefully get in the handicap proper."

    BRIAN O'CONNOR REPORTS
"Dropping your whip in the closing stages with Tony McCoy in hot pursuit is any jockey’s nightmare, but Davy Russell and Tofino Bay managed to overcome that late drama and land yesterday’s €80,000 Ladbrokes Troytown Chase at Navan.

On a day when the sky looked the limit for Don Cossack after his impressive jumping debut, and Russell completed a 25 to 1 hat-trick on Gigginstown Stud-owned horses, it was Tofino Bay that provided Ireland’s champion jockey with a real heart-in-mouth moment.

    a horseman to follow

"In recent seasons, Davy Russell has undoubtedly been the most progressive jump jockey in the Irish weighing room and has firmly established himself as one of the top riders in the country. Russell started the 2011/12 campaign in full health and with the Gigginstown House horses making an electric start to the campaign, Russell has positively erupted out of the stalls in his bid to gain an overdue Champion Jockey title."
